A NEW DOC AIRED BY PEOPLE&POWER ON AL JAZEERA INTERNATIONAL
CALIPARI FRIENDLY FIRE
SUNDAY, JUNE 29, ON AIR ON AL JAZEERA INTERNATIONAL AT 14:30 GMT
The investigative documentary, “Calipari Friendly Fire", will be aired Sunday by Al Jazeera International. The report by Italian journalists Fulvio Benelli and Emanuele Piano was produced by Oyibo Productions.
The 20 minute documentary follows a year of research and uncovers the events leading to and that followed the killing of Italian intelligence agent, Nicola Calipari, in Baghdad on March 4th 2005 by a U.S. check point. Calipari was on a mission in Iraq to free Italian journalist Giuliana Sgrena. He was shot by NY National Guard gunner, Mario Lozano.
Since no tribunal, in Italy or in the United States, will ever judge Lozano for his actions - a U.S. military commission has ruled the behaviour of the check point as correct and Italian judges have ruled out their jurisdiction on the case - the search for truth is left to reporters.
“Calipari Friendly Fire" unveils how Mario Lozano was not the only soldier to shoot on the oncoming vehicle, how the U.S intelligence - although denying the circumstance - was aware of the mission by the Italian secret service agent to free Sgrena and how the crime scene was hastily cleaned up after the incident.
